Linn Brown

PA ~ For someone who doesn't know about Linn Brown, please give our readers a brief synopsis of yourself as an artist.

I am a songwriter who plays keyboards and sings. My style is reminiscent of Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, etc.

PA ~ When did you take up keyboards and/or singing?

I wrote a song at age seven that I sang and played on the piano. Then in High School I became serious about writing. I started performing my songs my first year in college.

PA ~ Who are you influenced by musically and in your writings?

I grew up listening to the Beatles, Joni Mitchell, and Motown artists. My parents are musicians and classical music and jazz were staples in our house. I am inspired by writers like Donald Fagen, Stevie Wonder, Laura Nyro, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, of course, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor....I could go on and on...

PA ~ What is the listener in store for with your 2002 CD release "mend"?

"mend" is a heart-centered CD. I write in a lot of different styles and use different production on each song. It's an emotional album based on a theme of lost love, looking for new love and finding it.

PA ~ How has the CD been received?

I believe it has been received very well. I had a lovely review from Evolution of Media (www.eomentertainment.com), and songs from "mend" are getting airplay on internet, traditional and satellite radio stations.

PA ~ Any interesting gig stories  ( I always send this question on ~ have fun with it )

In college, I performed at The Red Herring Folk Festival. Dan Fogelberg and I sang a duet that was recorded by Rich Warren. It became a number one hit on our college radio station. My claim to fame!

PA ~ Where can someone find out more about Linn Brown?

www.linnbrown.com

PA ~ Any other projects or followups in the works presently?

Yes. I am working on my third CD, "Passion and Temperance". It should be available in late fall of 2005.

PA ~ Give us your thoughts on the indie music scene good and not so good.

I find the internet has made a world of difference in my life. Writing songs can be lonely work if you are not well known. Since 2000 when I recorded my first CD, "Songs" (download it free at www.linnbrown.com), and then "mend",  the internet has given me opportunities that I never imagined before. CDBABY.com has given my CD digital distribution through 34 companies. Having someone from Italy that I don't even know buy "mend", probably while I'm sleeping, has been worth the years of isolation.

PA ~ What advice would you give to up and coming musicians?

I used to think I wanted fame. I recently realized that what I've really wanted is an audience.

PA ~ Do you perform outside of your hometown?

I would, given the opportunity.

PA ~ What's the most satisfying; writing, recording or performing live?

1.)   I love to write. I especially love the phase in a new song where it's not quite "hard-set". It's still liquid enough to give me chills.
2.)   I also love to record in the studio. Producing a CD is like renovating a house. Each room is related to the theme of the house but is distinguished by it's decor. I love to "decorate" a song with my string parts or back-up vocals. I have to hire the right people to do the things I can't, like play the guitar.
3.)   Although there are times when you have to pull me off stage with a cane, I find performing to be problematic. I tend to be too critical of myself before, during and after a performance, so I would say it's the least satisfying out of the three. I'm working on that, though!
