State of Being
Contributing writer - Terri Simons

PA ~ Who are the members of State of Being?

Christopher Földi: I’m on vocals and guitar, and we have Shara Földi on keyboards, Scott Földi on guitar, Rayanne Turek on bass,
and Randy Blaire on drums.

PA ~ How long have you been together?

State of Being has existed in some shape or form since the early nineties. The five of us have been playing together since 2003.

PA ~ Who/what are some of your inspirations?

We find we do most of our writing as a response to frustration – either as a rant or a release. Thematically - psychology, sociology and science
fiction have been consistently influential. Our biggest inspiration has been working with Andy Kubiszewski (Stabbing Westward, Prick, The The...), who produced our CD “Haywire”. He pushed us in writing and
recording more than anyone else ever has.

PA ~ What releases are available?

If people are checking us out for the first time, they should definitely check out “Haywire.” We also have a 2-CD set of "Haywire Remixes" done by various artists. The remixes take on quite a different approach from the original versions.
Most are better suited for the dance floor, while others range from lounge to noise. Past releases include “Implosion” (2002), “Static in my Brain” (1998), “Dysfunctional Vision” (1995), and a handful of EP’s.

CDs are available through our website (www.stateofbeing.com)
and most online retailers, such as CD Baby (www.cdbaby.com).
It's available locally at all area Exchange stores.
We also have it on hand at all of our live performances.

PA ~ How is “Haywire” different from your past releases?

For our previous CD, “Implosion”, we wrote about 15 songs and recorded 11 of them. For “Haywire”, we wrote at least 40 songs to ultimately record the best 13. It was definitely a more perfection-driven process. We’ve never been prouder of any record.

PA ~ How do you work together as a unit?

When writing songs, often one of us starts an idea and another picks it up where they left off. We know how to finish each other’s thoughts. For example, I thought we had finished the lyrical content of “End of the World” (last song on “Haywire”). While I was laying the vocal tracks in the studio, we found we needed another verse, which Shara quickly penned while I continued recording. The same thing happened with Scott on “Beneath the Skin”.

PA ~ Tell us about SynthCleveland and any other projects you're working on.

SynthCleveland (www.synthcleveland.com) is an area electronic resource group that I occasionally help out with. The group has released several
compilation CDs which make it evident how diverse the scene is. I put together a related website, www.darkcleveland.com which is primarily a
concert calendar, club night and radio show list.

PA ~ What have some of the highlights of your career been?

Opening for some of our favorite bands like Pigface, Thrill Kill Kult, and The Church. I think the best is yet to come though. The new record is continuing to open some doors for us. Locally, we scored rotation on WBWC with “Levity” and "Take Me Away". We've recently gotten some minor commercial airplay around the U.S. - most notably KUPD Phoenix where I did a live interview recently.
We've also had amazing support from internet radio - especially Live365 stations.

PA ~ Do you have any amusing or otherwise stories you'd like to share?

Shara Foldi: A recent semi-amusing story was our show in New York City this past summer. On the upside it was a dream-gig, hosted by Legends Magazine at a cool club in Manhattan, on a Saturday night, and the prime slot on the bill. On the down side, our vehicle broke down right outside the club, right in the middle of Manhattan! We could either traumatize over it, or load our gear in, call AAA, put on a damn great show, and deal with it in the morning. We did the latter and had a great night. Afterwards other bands helped us get back to where we were staying, since we were down our main vehicle. This story goes on and on and on, and you wouldn't believe - from the expensive repair in Manhattan, to the delayed return home and missed work, to another break-down middle-of-nowhere-PA because Manhattan put the wrong part in! The saga continued and we finally got back to Cleveland Wednesday night when we should have gotten back Sunday night! That was a trip!
